Simon Spillett has been at the forefront of the UK jazz since the 1990’s and his energetic and forthright sound and approach always grabs the audience firmly by the collar! In this concert the theme is the great tenor players of jazz and will feature the famous renditions and compositions of Dexter Gordon, Colman Hawkins, Stan Getz, Ben Webster and Sonny Rollins. The rhythm section is led by London piano virtuoso, Sean Fyfe, and local talents, bassist George Trebar and drummer Pete Cater whose long standing partnership with Simon in their big band tribute to tenor-man Tubby Hayes has seen tours throughout the UK to critical acclaim.

After a sell out concert last year, US touring alto saxophone legend and hard bop specialist Greg Abate makes his return appearance to St Andrews. Greg’s unrelenting schedule has seen him touring all around Europe and UK several time in the past few years, showcasing his ‘in-the-pocket’ be-bop playing. Greg started his career with the Ray Charles band before being asked to play with the Artie Shaw band. Since then he has gone on to lead his own groups as well as appear as a side man to such greats as Jerome Richardson and Charlie Parker’s trumpeter, Red Rodney.

Gideon Tazelaar
Dutch tenor saxophonist Gideon Tazelaar is one of Europe’s most exciting young jazz talents, known for his expressive, tradition-rooted sound. A prodigy, he entered the Amsterdam Conservatoire at just 14 before moving to New York to study at the Juilliard School. Mentored by leading figures including Wynton Marsalis and George Coleman, he has performed with major international artists and released his debut album Volume 1. Now based between New York and Europe, Tazelaar is widely recognised for his dynamic improvisation and deep connection to classic jazz styles.
Arnie Somogyi
Arnie Somogyi is a highly respected UK jazz bassist, bandleader, and composer with an extensive international career. A frequent performer at Ronnie Scott’s and major festivals, he has worked with leading figures including the Mingus Big Band, Art Farmer, and Amy Winehouse. Featured on more than 50 recordings, Somogyi is also known for his own acclaimed projects, including The Ellington Piano Project. His playing combines technical precision with a deep understanding of jazz tradition, making him a central figure on the British jazz scene.
