Espousing the golden era of The Blue Note era of the 1950’s and 60’s the band play a broad array from the much loved recordings of Lee Morgan, Dexter Gordan, Donald Byrd, Hank Mobley, Freddie Hubbard et al.
Chris Coull is a trumpeter well known in the UK and overseas for his lyrical be-bop styled playing and band leading. His influences include Clifford Brown, Miles Davis with a good dose of Freddie Hubbard and even a little Wynton thrown in the mix. Past excursions have seen him play at Royal Albert Hall, Isle of Wight Festival, Jazz At The Lincoln Centre, Appleby Jazz Festival, Love Supreme Festival, to name but a few. As a side man he has played alongside Alan Barnes, the late great Johnny Dankworth, American heavyweight American sax player Jerry Weldon, and Richard Johnson.
The Quintet includes Brighton bass man Dan Sheppard, Terry Seabrook (piano) and Darren Beckett on drums.
His latest recordings have include his 2022 album “Just One Of Those Things” in collaboration with Sara Oschlag, “Blues On the Corniche” arranged with full string section raising over £25,000 for cancer research, and “Jazz from the Sands”, a sumptuous small group CD of the great American song book.
“Moody and sophisticated, ‘Blues on the Corniche’ is an ambitious, highly skilled album that captures the diverse richness from Chris Coull.”
Grammy award winner Jason Olaine (Jazz at the Lincoln Centre, New York)
Great to hear my old pal Chris Coull & company swingin’ through some jazz classics . Nice take on Cole Porter (“Just one of Those Things”) and Clifford Brown’s great standard “Daahoud” , It’s a groove!
