Chris Coull
Jazz Trumpeter, Band Leader,
Arranger and Composer.
Hi, and welcome to my website.
Here you’ll find information about me, the gigs I perform and organise, and the recordings I’ve made over the years.
I’m Chris, a jazz trumpet player based in Brighton.
I run The Speakeasy Jazz Club in Hove, where my band performs every Wednesday evening alongside featured guest artists. Hidden away above The Wick Inn, it’s a dedicated jazz venue with a relaxed atmosphere, cosy alcoves, bar seating and a touch of New York supper club charm.
I also organise and perform most Friday evenings at St Andrew’s Church in Hove, where we present weekly concerts featuring outstanding local musicians alongside touring artists from across the UK and beyond. We’re incredibly fortunate to have such a rich jazz scene here in Brighton & Hove and along the South Coast, while also welcoming musicians from London and internationally acclaimed guests. Over the years we’ve been delighted to host artists including Ralph Moore, Claire Martin, Howard Alden and Tony Kofi, to name just a few.
You’ll find details of all upcoming performances under the Gigs tab, along with more information about both venues.
If you’d like a weekly roundup of what’s happening on the Hove jazz scene, send me a WhatsApp message on 07948 260789, or join our mailing list using the Email button above.
Recordings
The Shop page features my albums spanning more than a decade. The journey begins back in 2011 with recordings from my time in Doha, Qatar, where I was Musical Director of Doha Jazz for almost twenty years. Since then I’ve recorded several Blue Note-inspired projects with wonderful musicians including Andy Panayi and Mark Bassey, as well as albums featuring two of my favourite vocalists, Sara Oschlag and Imogen Ryall.
My latest release, Songs From Porgy and Bess, (featuring the wonderful Imogen Ryall) is available on the Rubicon label on CD, vinyl and as a digital download through Bandcamp. We’re currently touring the UK with this project, and you’ll find dates and information under the dedicated tab at the top of the page.
A Little More About Me
When I’m not playing the trumpet, you’ll often find me enjoying sea swimming—although “enjoy” might be stretching it during the depths of winter—running (my marathon days are probably behind me, but you’ll often spot me at Saturday parkrun), and croquet. Yes, croquet really is a sport! Southwick Tennis & Croquet Club boasts eleven immaculate lawns at one of the country’s finest croquet venues. If you fancy giving it a go it’s well worth a visit. And if you’d like an introduction to the mysteries of the “Triple Peel”, just ask…

“Chris is a very lyrical musician who can be both sensitive and fiery with a great energy on stage. An excellent communicator with that classic bop trumpet sound. A joy to work with.”
Andy Panayi
Award winning saxophonist

“Chris is a beautiful lyrical trumpet player who embraces the great musical lineage of jazz.”
Dominick Farinacci
International jazz trumpeter and Wynton Marsalis protégé

“Since moving back to the UK Chris has firmly established himself with his excellent playing as a keeper of the flame in the classic jazz trumpet tradition and flowing be-bop lines.”
Steve Fishwick
Trumpet player and jazz lecturer
